Elan’s suite of Oral Controlled Release (OCR) technologies has been incorporated and successfully commercialized into over two dozen products worldwide.   Elan’s Oral Controlled Release Technology platform allows a range of release profiles and dosage forms to be engineered. Customised release profiles for oral dosage forms such as extended release, delayed release and pulsatile release have all been developed and commercialised.

In the 1980’s by applying Elan’s SODAS® technology, the drug delivery market was transformed when a calcium channel blocker that was given three times a day was reformulated to be given twice a day and was subsequently reformulated to a once daily product.  Annual sales for the reformulated Cardizem products went from $100M to $900M at peak.

Since then Elan has successfully collaborated with many large pharmaceutical companies and reformulated products using its OCR technology platform.

The following is a list of some of the products that Elan had applied its OCR technologies in its history.

  • Avinza® true once daily novel dual release morphine sulphate using Elan’s Oral Controlled Release SODAS® Technology currently marketed in US
  • Focalin® XR once daily dexmethylphenidate for the treatment of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, marketed by Novartis in US, using SODAS® Technology.
  • Naprelan® – a once daily form of naproxen sodium using Elan’s IPDAS® Matrix technology, which allows for rapid disintegration and microdispersion in the gastrointestinal tract and reduced gastro-intestinal side effects normally seen with naproxen.  Launched in US and Canada
  • Ritalin® LA, once daily methylphenidate for the treatment of Attention Deficit Hyperactivitiy Disorder, marketed by Novartis in US and International Markets developed using SODAS® bimodal release system to mimic twice daily Ritalin product
  • Theodur liquid and dry syrup - Controlled release dry syrup and liquid formulations of the bronchodilator theophylline, dosed every twelve hours and launched in Japan using Elan’s PHARMAZOME® Technology
  • Verelan® PM, a once daily, night-time chrono-timed version of the cardiovascular compound verapamil hydrochloride product using Elan’s CODAS™ Technology which provides therapeutic concentrations in high risk wakening period and maintains therapeutic effect during wakening hours, marketed in US

In an industry where reformulation and combination products will account for an increasingly large proportion of industry sales, applying a commercialized technology as offered by Elan can provide real patient benefits to compounds, and is critical for a successful life cycle management strategy.
