General Guidelines for Charitable Contributions, Sponsorship, and Patient Education Program Requests:
The purpose of this page is to provide guidance on Charitable Contributions, Sponsorships and Patient Education Programs funded by Elan’s U.S. entities, and to ensure alignment with Elan’s goals and objectives, which are focused on activities that improve the healthcare of patients; promote science, education and skills; and support the communities in which we operate.
Types of Elan Funding Requests:
Charitable Contribution: a Charitable Contribution is financial gift, donation or other means of support provided to a Charitable Organization. Charitable Organizations are not-for-profit and are tax exempt (e.g., 501(c)(3) or 501(c)(4) organizations under the provisions of the U.S. Internal Revenue Code or international equivalent, and exists for public benefit. Charitable Contributions are designed to meet a legitimate charitable objective and to benefit the general public or local community
Patient Education Program: Patient Education Programs support people living with a particular disease or condition, or inform the community at large about such disease or condition through activities or materials for diseases awareness, disease education, testing and/or screening initiatives. Such programs may involve presentations, including internet-based presentations, publications, and other durable patient educational materials. All Patient Education Programs should be open to a broad audience, including patients, caregivers, and/or the general public
Sponsorship: Sponsorship is financial support provided to an organization for a specific activity or event. Examples of Sponsorship include local health fairs, walks, runs, scientific and medical congresses, etc
There are many factors that are evaluated when reviewing funding requests, including but not limited to the following:
- Alignment with Elan’s areas of clinical interest
- Budget availability
- Compliance with all applicable policies and regulations
(*NOTE: On April 2, 2013, Elan and Biogen Idec finalized an agreement that transferred all operational aspects of the TYSABRI franchise to Biogen Idec. As a result, Charitable Donation, Patient Education, and Sponsorship requests in the areas of Multiple Sclerosis and Crohn’s Disease should be directed to Biogen Idec for review. Requests may not be funded for:
- Gifts to individuals or endowments
- Political organizations, political parties, third-party PACs, political candidates or political office holders, unless via an Elan PAC
- The purchase, construction, expansion or modification of facilities, equipment or other capital expenditures
Requests for funding should be made at least 10 weeks prior to the event date to ensure all necessary review and paperwork is completed in a timely manner. In order for your submission to be reviewed, Elan must receive the following:
- A formal request letter on the requesting institution’s letterhead
- A program or agenda of events, with specific topics, speakers, date(s), and location
- Tax ID and/or verification of a signed W-9 or W8-BEN
- 501 (c) attachments / designation letter for any charitable donation request
Requests may be subject to rejection if information is incomplete or missing
