G. Kelly Martin was appointed a Director of Elan in February 2003, following his appointment as President and Chief Executive Officer. He was formerly a member of the executive management committee of Merrill Lynch & Co., Inc., where he spent more than 20 years in a broad array of operating responsibilities on a global basis.
Back to topCarlos V. Paya, MD, PhD, joined Elan as President in November 2008. Dr. Paya joined Elan from Eli Lilly & Company, where he was Vice President, Lilly Research Laboratories and Global Leader of the Diabetes and Endocrine Platform, responsible for the company’s dominant franchise (insulin products). He had been an executive with Lilly since 2001, gaining a wide range of leadership experience in different therapeutic areas and business strategy. Prior to his career at Lilly, Dr. Paya had a 16-year relationship/experience with the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, which began with his acceptance into the Mayo Graduate School of Medicine in 1984 and concluded with a six-year tenure as Professor of Medicine, Immunology and Pathology and Vice Dean of the Clinical Investigation program. Dr. Paya's other responsibilities and positions at or associated with Mayo included two years as Associate Professor and Senior Associate Consulting Staff, Infectious Diseases and Internal Medicine, Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, and Immunology; and four years as a Research Scientist at Institute Pasteur, Paris and as Chief, Infectious Diseases Unit, Hospital 12 Octubre, Madrid, Spain.
Back to topMenghis Bairu, MD, was appointed Executive Vice President and Head of Global Development in September 2008. He was appointed Senior Vice President and Head of International for biopharmaceutical activities in May 2007. Since joining Elan in 2004, Dr. Bairu served as Vice President and Head of Global Medical Affairs and Senior Director in charge of the Regional Medical Scientists. Prior to joining Elan, Dr. Bairu worked at Genentech from 1999 to 2004 in various commercial, clinical and managed care roles of increasing responsibilities. Dr. Bairu worked as Medical Director for Fremont Health Corporation before joining Genentech. He received his undergraduate degree in Business Administration from Instituto VII Tecnico Commerciale in Milan, Italy, and attended the Universita Statale, Facolta' di Medicina e Chirurgia (Faculty of Medicine & Surgery) in Milan, where he received his Medical Degree.
Back to topChris Burns joined Elan as Senior Vice President, Investor Relations, in November 2004. Prior to joining Elan, he was Managing Director, Co-head of Americas Equity Research for Merrill Lynch & Co. During a 23-year career at Merrill Lynch, Mr. Burns also served in positions in sales management, product management and institutional equity sales. Mr. Burns is a graduate of Duke University and earned his MBA at New York University.
Back to topNigel Clerkin was appointed Senior Vice President, Finance and Group Controller in January 2004, having previously held a number of financial and strategic planning positions since joining Elan in January 1998. He is also our Principal Accounting Officer. Mr. Clerkin is a chartered accountant and a graduate of Queen’s University Belfast.
Back to topRichard Collier joined Elan as Executive Vice President and General Counsel in November 2004. Prior to joining Elan, Mr. Collier was Senior Counsel at Morgan, Lewis & Bockius LLP. Prior to joining Morgan Lewis, he was Senior Vice President and General Counsel at Pharmacia (now Pfizer), after serving in that same position at Pharmacia & Upjohn. Prior to his experience at Pharmacia, Mr. Collier spent 11 years at Rhone-Poulenc Rorer, Inc. Previously, he was in private practice after having served with the U.S. Federal Trade Commission and U.S. Department of Justice. Mr. Collier is a graduate of Temple University and also earned his Juris Doctor at Temple University.
Back to topShane Cooke was appointed a Director of Elan in May 2005, having joined the company as Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer in July 2001. He was appointed head of Elan Drug Technologies in May 2007 Prior to joining Elan, Mr. Cooke was Chief Executive of Pembroke Capital Limited, an aviation leasing company, and prior to that held a number of senior positions in finance in the banking and aviation industries. Mr. Cooke is a chartered accountant and a graduate of University College Dublin.
Back to topWilliam F. Daniel was appointed a Director of Elan in February 2003, and served until July 2007. He has served as the Company Secretary since December 2001, having joined Elan in March 1994 as Group Financial Controller. In July 1996, he was appointed Group Vice President, Finance, Group Controller and Principal Accounting Officer. From 1990 to 1992, Mr. Daniel was Financial Director of Xtravision, plc. Mr. Daniel is a chartered accountant and a graduate of University College Dublin.
Back to topKaren S. Kim was appointed Executive Vice President, Special Projects, in February 2009. She has served as head of Commercial, Corporate Communications and Corporate Development, and was named Executive Vice President in January 2005. She joined Elan in September 2003 as Senior Vice President, head of Global Corporate Strategy and Strategic Alliances. Prior to joining Elan, Ms. Kim held senior management positions at Merrill Lynch, which she joined in 1998, and where she was most recently head of Client Development in the International Private Client Group. Previously, she held senior management positions at the Cambridge Group and The MAC Group/Gemini Consulting. She is a graduate of Wellesley College and earned her MBA from the Harvard Graduate School of Business Administration.
Back to topKathleen Martorano was appointed Executive Vice President, Strategic Human Resources, and a member of the Office of the Chief Executive Officer, in January 2005. She joined Elan in May 2003 as Senior Vice President, Corporate Marketing & Communications. Prior to joining Elan, Ms. Martorano held senior management positions at Merrill Lynch, which she joined in 1996, and where she was most recently First Vice President of Marketing and Communications for the International Private Client Group. Previously, she held senior management positions with Salomon Brothers. Ms. Martorano holds a Bachelor of Science degree from Villanova University.
Back to topJohannes Roebers, PhD joined Elan as Senior Vice President, Head of Biologic Strategy, Planning and Operations, in July 2007. Prior to joining Elan, Dr. Roebers worked at Genentech Inc., where he headed Engineering, Facilities, Validation and Manufacturing Technical Services at the Oceanside, California, manufacturing site and where he was also responsible for the start-up and operations leading to FDA licensure of Avastin in April 2007. Dr. Roebers joined Genentech when it acquired the Oceanside facility from Biogen Idec in 2005, as he had been Biogen Idec's project leader for design, construction and start-up since the project's inception in 2001. Before joining Biogen Idec, Dr. Roebers spent 11 years with the Bayer Corporation in a series of strategically important engineering, biologics and manufacturing positions in Leverkusen, Germany; Nova Scotia, Canada; Clayton, North Carolina; and Rosia, Italy. He received his Diplom-Ingenieur in Mechanical Engineering from RWTH Aachen in Aachen, Germany; and his Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering from Clemson University in Clemson, South Carolina.
Back to topDale Schenk, PhD was appointed Executive Vice President in August 2007. He was named Senior Vice President and Chief Scientific Officer in June 2003. From 1999 to 2003, Dr. Schenk was Senior Vice President of Discovery Research at Elan, and from 1998 to 1999, he was the company's Vice President of Neurobiology. Previously, Dr. Schenk was Director of Neurobiology for Athena Neurosciences from 1994 to 1998. Earlier at Athena, from 1987 to 1994, Dr. Schenk served as the leader of several research programs. Dr. Schenk earned his Bachelor's degree in Biology from the University of California, San Diego and a PhD in Physiology and Pharmacology from the University of California, San Diego.
Back to topMary Stutts joined Elan as Senior Vice President and Head of Corporate Relations in November 2008. Ms. Stutts has more than 20 years of global experience in healthcare communications. Prior to joining Elan, Ms. Stutts was the Vice President of Corporate Communications for United Health Group – a Fortune 20 company with revenues of $80 billion and 70,000 employees. Ms. Stutts served as head of Corporate Relations at Genentech, where she provided strategic direction for internal, external and product communications; media relations; web communications; patient advocacy; public policy; and community relations and philanthropy. Prior to her seven years at Genentech, Ms. Stutts was Director of Public Policy and Communications for Bayer Corporation and, earlier, was with Kaiser Permanente for eight years, managing public relations, public affairs, government relations and internal communications. Ms. Stutts received a Master's degree in Health Administration at the University of Southern California and a Bachelor's degree in Communications Management at the University of Louisiana. She also is a graduate of the Executive Education Program at Stanford University.
Back to topRenee P. Tannenbaum, Pharm.D., joined Elan as Executive Vice President and Chief Commercial Officer in June 2009. Dr. Tannenbaum joins Elan with more than 25 years of global pharmaceutical experience, most recently serving for three years as Head of Global Commercial Operations for Novartis Pharma AG. Prior to her experience at Novartis, Dr. Tannenbaum spent nine years at Bristol-Myers Squibb in a range of executive commercial positions with increasing management and revenue-generation responsibility. Dr. Tannenbaum was with Merck-Medco Managed Care for three years, preceded by 10 years at Merck & Co., with positions of increasing responsibility in marketing, market research, managed care, sales and clinical research. Since 1981, she has served as Adjunct Clinical Assistant Professor at Philadelphia College of Pharmacy & Sciences, a division of University of the Sciences in Philadelphia.
Back to topTed Yednock, PhD was appointed Executive Vice President, head of Global Research, in August 2007. He was named Senior Vice President, head of Global Research, in September 2005. Dr. Yednock joined Athena Neurosciences in 1990 to initiate work on MS. He has contributed to a number of research efforts since that time in the areas of both autoimmune and neurodegeneration, and has held a number of scientific and management positions within the organization. Most recently, Dr. Yednock served as Vice President, Biology. He earned his Bachelor's degree in Biology and Chemistry from the University of Illinois and his PhD in Immunology from the University of California, San Francisco.
