Elan Satellite Symposium

Link to timeline graphic"Current Progress on Development of Therapeutic Strategies Based upon the Amyloid Hypothesis".In this important session, Elan brings together experts from across the industry to present an incisive state-of-the-art overview of current AD research. This is a unique opportunity for conference attendees to hear up-to-date information on programs and projects that will hopefully move the scientific and medical communities ever closer to solving the mysteries of AD and to potentially helping the millions of patients who suffer from it. Presentation highlights include an overview of beta secretase and gamma secretase as potential therapeutic targets, preclinical findings from Elan’s A-beta immunotherapy project, and information concerning the effects of AN-1792 on AD disease pathology. Other topics include targeting cholesterol, targeting glycosaminoglycans (GAGs), and clioquinol and metal-protein attenuating compounds (MPAC) in the treatment of Alzheimer's disease.

Elan's novel therapeutic approaches to treating AD embody two key trends: medicines and molecules are moving from the lab to the clinic and the beta-amyloid research strategy is emerging as a standard bearer. In collaboration with Wyeth, Elan is currently conducting Phase I clinical trials with an experimental monoclonal antibody, which is being evaluated in patients with mild to moderate Alzheimer’s disease. The compound, AAB-001, is designed and engineered to neutralize the neurotoxic beta-amyloid peptide that accumulates in the brains of patients with AD.

Elan also has research programs focused on small molecule inhibitors of beta secretase and gamma secretase, enzymes whose actions are thought to affect the accumulation of amyloid plaques in the brains of patients with Alzheimer’s disease. To read more, click here.
